  • Senate approves BCYC specialization in Indigenous contexts
2000-2010
  • 2010 (Fall) – First cohort of Indigenous students to graduate from the newly named diploma program (10 of the original 12 students successfully graduated)
  • 2010 – ECE early years Basic Certification option becomes available through the BCYC degree
  • 2009 - Diploma in Child and Youth Care in Indigenous Communities (name change)
  • 2007- School enters into partnership with North Island Indigenous communities to deliver an ISSP funded diploma program
  • 2007 – Early Years Specialization Stream option introduced
  • 2007 - First year of the four-year degree Bachelor of Arts in Child and Youth Care degree program and new curriculum
  • 2004 - The SCYC ECDVU completes a master's degree program in Africa with 27 of 30 participants completing the three-year program
  • 2003 - PhD in Child and Youth Care proposal approved
  • Fall 2003 - Transition from cohort-based Masters of Arts degree to Flexible Delivery Model Master of Arts Degree

1990s
  • 1998 - University Senate and Board of Governors approval for a Master of Arts degree in Child and Youth Care
  • 1997 - Cohort, community-based, master's program for first nations for the Awasis of northern Manitoba completed
  • 1995 - First PhD in Child and Youth Care (by special arrangement)
  • 1994 - First partnership with First Nations communities to deliver a Master of Arts program on-site
  • 1994 - UVic Senate recognition of Diploma program in First Nations CYC
  • 1990 - First partnership with First Nations’ communities to deliver in-community curriculum (FNPP)
1980s
  • 1988 - Name change to School of Child and Youth Care
  • 1987 - First Master of Arts degree graduate (by Special Arrangement)
  • 1983 - Child life course (CYC 460) was developed and offered for the first time. This course, combined with the focused practicum placements in child life settings, constituted the first informal specialization stream in the school and produced child life practitioners with a university degree for the first time in Canada.
  • 1983- School establishes first distance education bachelor's program in child care – The first off-campus distance course offerings. The school was one of the early adopters of the distance education model at UVic which, in turn, was a pioneer in this modality within BC and the country.
  • 1978- Name change to School of Child Care
  • 1973- First students admitted to the newly established "Programme in Child Care"

and external events

The school has evolved within the context of many important, often collaborative, initiatives across the field provincially, nationally, within North America and beyond. The initiatives, pivotal organizations and resources identified here provide context for our research, curriculum and planning.

The developments within the school are informed by, and at times inform, these important events. It is contributions from across the sector that have built and continue build this relatively new profession.

  • 2010 - Child and Youth Care Educational Accreditation Board (CYCEAB) of Canada established
  • 2010 - Education alliance re-established
  • 2010 - First year of the online journal "International Journal of Child Youth and Family Studies"
  • 2010 - North American Competencies for Professional Child and Youth Work Practitioners – updated document distributed
  • 2007 - A Model for Core curriculum for Child and Youth Care Education in British Columbia - Building upon the foundations of "A Model for Core Curriculum for Child and Youth Care Education in British Columbia" (1999), this document represents another important step in the evolution of core CYC curriculum in the post-secondary education system of British Columbia.
  • 2003 – "Promise into Practice," international conference, co-sponsored by the BC Education Consortium (BCCYCEC), The Association for Child & Youth Care Practice (ACYCP) and Council of Canadian Child and Youth Care Associations (CCCYCA).
  • 2001 – North American Certification Project (NACP) Competencies For Professional Child And Youth Work Practitioners document is released.
  • 2000 - First year of delivery of child protection specialization throughout social work and child and youth care programs in British Columbia
  • 1999 – Provincial Child protection specialization competencies are established in BC and an educational alliance is established.
  • 1995 – 1997 – The multilateral task force on training, career pathing and labour mobility was established to coordinate the social services sector within the province.

    This was a complex amalgam of government officials, educators, practitioners, employers and union representatives who met on a monthly basis and developed occupational competencies for cycchild and youth care, social work, eceearly childhood education, community justice, immigrant and settlement services, community living, infant development and women’s services sub-sectors.

  • 1998 - Education alliance formed with representatives across BC child and youth care programs, social work programs and the Ministry of Children and Family Development.
  • 1998 - Shared child protection curriculum created through collaboration between: BC consortium of Child and Youth Care Educators and Schools of Social Work.
  • 1997 - British Columbia Community Social Services Multi-Lateral Task Force on Training, Career Pathing and Labour Mobility (June, 1997). Family and Children’s Services sub sector: occupational standards of competence. (Inter-sectoral collaboration including the British Columbia Child and Youth Care Education Consortium (BCCYCEC)
  • 1995 - North American Consortium of Child and Youth Care Education Programs (NACCYCEP) established.
  • 1995 - Special Report: Curriculum Content for Child and Youth Care Practice: Recommendations of the North American Consortium of Child and Youth Care Education Programs. Child and Youth Care Forum, 23(4), 269-278.
  • 1991 – The BC Child and Youth Care Education Consortium was established to focus on the development, coordination and evaluation of core curriculum for child and youth care post-secondary education in BC. The structure aimed to ensure consistency and quality across educational programs by coordinating admission, transfer credit and prior learning assessment processes. The consortium produced a key document entitled "A Model Core Curriculum for Child and Youth Care Education in British Columbia" (1999). The BCCYCEC continues to be a key educational planning structure within the province and is a single point of contact for a unified voice on issues relating to the child and youth care field.
  • 1988 - Development of a North American Text: Perspectives in Professional Child and Youth Care by Ferguson, Pence and Denholm.
  • 1988 Malaspina College, College of the Fraser Valley and SCYC collaborate on the creation of two new CYC bachelor's degree programs.
  • 1987 - First textbook in the field: Professional Child and Youth Care practice: the Canadian Perspective.
  • 1984 - Council of Canadian Child and Youth Care Associations is formed.
  • 1983 - Publication of "The Scope of Child and Youth Care Practice In British Columbia."
  • 1982 - First issue of the Journal of Child Care was published as the product of a planning session held at the 1981 conference.
