How to apply
A bachelor’s degree in child and youth care offers exciting career opportunities. Our students develop transferrable and career-specific skills to support good practice with children, youth, families and communities experiencing difficulties.
Successful applicants discover valuable knowledge, experience personal growth, and develop connections with an interesting and dynamic group of fellow students who come to the school from diverse backgrounds, cultures and orientations.
General
information
You need to apply to both the university and the degree program. We accept program applications between December and the last day of February each year. The links and forms (in the Applications Package tab) needed to complete your program application will only be available during this period. Distance delivery
pre-requisite and
elective courses
You can begin by taking CYC elective courses before applying for admission to our degree program. Do this by registering through:
- UVic admission category pre-CYC in the Faculty of Human and Social Development or as a qualifying student
- Thompson Rivers University Open Learning
NOTE: Admission to the School of Child and Youth Care is competitive. Success in individual courses is not a guarantee of admission to the school.

You need to apply to both the university and the school.

Admission requirements to the School of Child and Youth Care for applicants from secondary school are the same as those outlined for the Faculty of Social Sciences.
You’ll need to submit:
- An online application for admission to the university
- a program application (available here in early December) to the School of Child and Youth Care
- a statement of intent
- two completed reference forms (available here in early December)

Transferring from other institutions
Applicants transferring from other institutions
To apply to the School of Child and Youth Care from a college or another university, you must have completed either:
- a minimum of 12 units/24 credits of university transfer courses OR
- a human services diploma from an accredited institution with an overall GPA of B. This will result in a block transfer credit of 30 units/60 credits. Note: students with a lower GPA may still apply and if accepted, may receive some individual course transfer credit.
You’ll need to submit:
- an online application for admission to the university.
- a program application (forms available here in early December) to the School of Child and Youth Care
- a courses in progress form (available here in early December) if you are currently taking courses
- a statement of intent
- two completed reference forms (available here in early December)
- a professional resume

Transferring from other UVic faculties
Applicants transferring from other UVic faculties
To transfer from another UVic faculty you’ll need to submit:
- an application for re-registration to Records Services and
- a program application (forms available here in early December) to the School of Child and Youth Care.
- two completed reference forms (forms available here in early December)
- a statement of intent
- a professional resume

A special access or qualifying student
Special access or qualifying students
Special access students admitted in the Pre-CYC admissions category must complete 12 units of coursework before applying to the degree program.

Where are the application forms and descriptions?

The school only accepts program applications between December and the last day of February each year. In order to avoid confusion and lost applications, the links and forms needed to complete your program application will only be available during this period.

Bachelor of Child and Youth Care application form - Print and mail your completed School of Child and Youth Care (SCYC) application form along with the other SCYC application package materials listed below to:

Courses in progress form - If you're currently registered in a course at another academic institution you must complete the courses in progress form. Send the top portion with your School of Child and Youth Care application.
Reference forms - Please ensure two (2) reference forms are completed and returned directly to the School of Child and Youth Care by the referees. Reference forms should be completed by your most recent/current employer or supervisor, in a paid or volunteer position. A university/college instructor or practicum supervisor may also be a referee.
Statement of intent - Please provide a two- or three-page typed letter that addresses the following. Attach it to your School of Child and Youth Care application.
- Describe your understanding of the field of child and youth care and the role of the professional child and youth care worker.
- What are the most crucial characteristics of a professional child and youth care practitioner?
- What would you describe as a significant experience in your life that has contributed to your choice of this program
- What are your thoughts about learning about diverse groups and exploring your values and attitudes?
Professional resume - Include a current professional resume with your School of Child and Youth Care application. Please outline thoroughly paid and volunteer experience in the human services field.

Note: Courier packages are only delivered during office hours (Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.). There are no building street numbers at the University of Victoria. Some courier companies will not deliver without a street address. Please tell your courier company that courier drivers are familiar with the University of Victoria buildings and will deliver without a building number.
